‘La Saboteuse’, the second album by British-Bahraini trumpeter Yazz Ahmed, made a global impact both critically -Jazz Album of the Year at The Wire- and commercially. The album’s striking cover artwork, by artist Sophie Bass, is dedicated to the thousands of lives lost crossing the Mediterranean in recent times.

Yazz Ahmed’s highly anticipated third album, ‘Polyhymnia’, is a major work conceived as a message to the world about history and the growing empowerment of women. The album includes powerful tributes to prominent women in history.

Storyline:

The unemployed trombone player Glenn Miller is always broken, chasing his sound to form his band and hocking his instrument in the pawn house to survive. When his friend Chummy MacGregor is hired to play in the band of Ben Pollack, he invites him to join his band. Two years later he quits the band and proposes to his girlfriend Helen, who moves to New York to marry him. After the success of “Moonlight Serenade”, Glenn Miller’s band becomes famous worldwide.

Javier Navas Quintet

‘La revolución’ (Blue Asteroid Records, 2022) is the new album by Javier Navas Quintet, in which the band continues to develop their own language, an authentic voice, within the national jazz scene. The music that makes up ‘La revolución’ responds to a longing of listening, a vital self-affirmation sought in music itself and in Javier’s vital and personal experiences. Since its publication, ‘La revolución’ has already become part of the band’s musical heritage, giving them an authentic style, developing a language that draws from jazz, smooth or neo-soul.

In 2022, they have been selected for the AIE Jazz En Ruta tour, which will allow them to present ‘La revolución’ at our festival and at other festivals and cycles all over Spain.

Eivissa Jazz Experience

For the last sixteen years, the Eivissa Jazz Experience has brought together different musicians who have played at the festival at some point in an unprecedented experience: After one single rehearsal, they take it to the Eivissa Jazz stage to offer a concert that becomes a unique experience.

All this, under the musical direction of Galician pianist Abe Rábade who acts as ceremony master and the perfect cicerone of an island that is already his second musical home. Each of the members of the Experience’s own songs will be part of this concert’s repertoire, which has become one of the highlights of the festival year after year.

EME·EME·PROJECT

EME·EME·PROJECT is the quintet led by Madrid-based flautist and composer Marta Mansilla. After a long career accompanying great artists such as Rozalén, El Kanka, Maria Peláe or Jorge Pardo, she now presents ‘PACEMAKER’, a personal project where she combines her academic background and jazz influences with urban styles such as hip hop or soul.

‘PACEMAKER’ is her new work (recorded last March 2021 at Los Estudios Camaleón in Madrid with the renowned engineer Shayan Fathi and producer Pablo Martin Jones, winner of two Latin Grammy Awards in 2018, and the production of Jorge Drexler ‘Telefonía’).

Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa

This year, Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa has come up with a repertoire with a predominance of popular Ibizan songs arranged for a Jazz Big Band. Their proposal fits in with the growing enhancement of traditional culture adapted to other genres. Their repertoire will thrill the audience that joins them at Parc Reina Sofia (Ibiza Town) to enjoy jazz.

Andrés Coll Project

Andrés Coll Project brings together a group of musicians who combine research into the folk music of their own cultures with an avant-garde spirit and free improvisation.

In this project, Ibizan vibraphonist Andrés Coll mixes and investigates the relationship between North African gnawa music and the peasant dance/folk music of Ibiza and, also, Polish/Eastern European folklore. All of this with the avant-garde and free spirit that is the epitome of his work.

Lucía Fumero Trio

Lucía Fumero’s different musical influences come together in her first album, ‘Universo Normal’, her own project with original music that goes from one place to another, full of vitality as a breeze of fresh air.

The basis of her creative universe stems from folklore and is transformed through the background she has consolidated in classical and jazz music. She is equally interested in songs with voice and lyrics as in instrumental tracks. Lucia Fumero expresses herself with a rhythm marked by charisma and personality as well as impressionism, two apparently opposing concepts. However, when she composes, everything flows, dances and captivates in an inevitable way.

Arturo Pueyo Quartet

Ibizan clarinetist Arturo Pueyo presents his first album as composer and band leader, ‘Derroteros’, published on Cezanne label, in which he presents, for the first time, the music he has written over the past eight years. What anyone expects when they hear the notion of a jazz project led by a clarinetist is to go back to 1930s swing, played by great geniuses of this instrument such as Benny Goodman or Artie Shaw.

However, with the Arturo Pueyo Quartet you will discover a different way of playing the clarinet, with a language more based on bebop and also influenced by later trends in jazz, where clarinet is unusual.

Symbiosis 5

Band members Benedek Virág, guitar; Levente Kapolcsi-Szabó, piano; Máté Drippey, saxophone; Gyányi Tamás, double bass and Roland Gábor Majsai, drums, came together and gave birth to this project during their formative years at the Liszt Ferenc Zenemuvészeti Egyetem and the Bartók Béla Konzervatórium, almost two years ago.

The five young musicians share a similar enthusiasm for contemporary and modal jazz, but do not shy away from using other elements and diverse ideas throughout their creative work. The group plays original compositions and are all active members of the Hungarian jazz scene.

Symbiosis 5 have won the band competition at the 45th Getxo Jazz Festival. Every year, the winning band has the opportunity to play at Eivissa Jazz as part of the prize and thanks to the agreement between the Basque and the Ibizan festival.
