Vincent Peirani ‘Jokers’

Once again, accordionist Vincent Peirani reshuffles the cards. As a good jazz musician, he likes to venture into unexplored territories. As a good music fan and a very good musician in general, he is curious, enthusiastic, and eager to make new discoveries and find new things to listen to or play. ‘Jokers’, his first trio album, goes even further, and elsewhere.

The ‘Jokers’ project is not entirely new. It was born a few years ago when the German radio station NDR invited Vincent Peirani to produce two concerts, giving him carte blanche for the format. Vincent chose to turn for the first time to the jazz trio, a formula with such a long history that it is almost sacred, and certainly intimidating. But typically, he used that framework only to escape from it. His two accomplices, Federico Casagrande on guitar and Yoann Serra on drums, both have a wealth of experience and skills, an interest in rock and electronic music, and a taste for musical hybridity.

The drummer immediately suggested that Vincent (who expected nothing less) experiment with electronic effects on the accordion.The tone was set.The group gave the first of about thirty concerts, enabling them to discover and hone its possibilities. Then, when the time came to thinking about an album, Vincent Peirani decided to reshuffle the deck once more: Let’st ake the same musicians, but start all over again, with a repertoire and a sound completely different from the live performances.

Eivissa Jazz Experience

For the past seventeen years, the Eivissa Jazz Experience has brought together different musicians who have played at the festival at some point, in an unprecedented experience: After one single rehearsal, they take it to the Eivissa Jazz stage to offer a concert that becomes a unique experience.

All this, under the musical direction of Galician pianist Abe Rábade who acts as ceremony master and the perfect cicerone of an island that is already his second musical home. Each of the members of the Experience’s own songs will be part of this concert’s repertoire, which has become one of the highlights of the festival year after year.

Jose Carra Quintet

‘Satélite’ is the title of the most recent work by Malaga-bor pianist Jose Carra. It features his usual trio, with Bori Albero (double bass) and Dani Domínguez (drums) and, for this project, he is also joined by Luis Regidor (guitar and vocals), as well as Enrique Oliver (sax). In ‘Satélite’ they immerse themselves into an even more eclectic sound – if possible – with elaborated melodies and a base close to electronic music, rock metal and harmonies reminiscent of classical music, all of which are enhanced live.

The motivic material is the same for all the music and it evolves through the songs. There are parts that are written backwards so that they sound like that and when they are turned around, they sound right side up again but with the attacks of the notes reversed. All this has a lot of influence from the book ‘Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid. An overview of Gödel’s incompleteness theorems’, which has to do with the recursive algorithms and self-references of Escher’s lithographs, paradoxes and puzzles.

The music is inspired by astrophysical phenomena and represents a new sound in Carra’s universe, a universe that will surprise the audience as it moves into the human dimension of live performance.

Giulio Ottanelli Quartet

Giulio Ottanelli is a brilliant young saxophonist, composer and arranger, who has already won many international awards, including Getxo Jazz Band Contest in 2023, which will allow him and his band to play at Eivissa Jazz, as part of the prize. His quartet with Jeremie Lucchese (tenor sax), Cyril Drapé (double bass) and Emile Rameau (drums) delivers a rhythmic and energetic proposal, with refined melodies that explore all the contrapuntal and expressive possibilities that can be created when two saxophones are free to interact outside the “cage” of the harmonic instrument.

His compositions are inspired by western music (when it comes to harmony, formal organization and logical development) by jazz music (for its energy, rhythm, the composing process and improvisation) and by popular music for its melodies and odd tempos. With L. Tristano and B. Strayhorn as some of his inspirations.

There is a strong connection between the band members, both from an artistic as well as a human point of view, which guarantees great interplay and energetic performances. The very recognizable themes of their songs, which alternate with impetuous improvisations, make their show a very accessible one that can appeal to all types of audiences.

Los Aurora

Los Aurora are a flamenco-jazz group that revolutionised the national and international music scene with the release of their first album ‘Aurora’ (Taller de Músicos/Discmedi, 2017), with which they toured venues and festivals all over the world. Their daring and personal musical proposal represents a breath of fresh air in a genre such as flamenco.

On the occasion of the launch of their new album ‘La Balsa de la Medusa’ (Self-published, 2022), they offer a new live show. It features a more electric and energetic sound, closer to rock, where they transform with a transgressive attitude the classical references which are always present in the DNA of this Barcelona-born band. Their sound is based on flamenco and moves towards jazz, moving away from the more classical sound of the compositions that inspire them.

In this new musical adventure, they travel through the most popular flamenco songs, while evolving towards more daring languages that go beyond the more traditional sonorities and merge with other genres. This new artistic approach is perfectly dressed with the powerful voice of the young ‘cantaor’ singer Pere Martínez, the piano of Max Villavecchia, the bass of Javi Garrabella and the drums of Joan Carles Marí. In addition, a new visual proposal of lighting design by Ángel Guilanyà is added, which reinforces the always powerful dancing of Pol Jiménez. The ‘bailaor’ (dancer) combines tradition and modernity based on flamenco’s “palos jondos” such as the seguiriya and the farruca with more “cheeky” touches in the more experimental musical parts. In their Eivissa Jazz concert, they will be joined by trumpet player Antonio Moreno.

Juan Saiz Quartet

In 2016, British label Leo Records Music, one of the most important in avant-garde jazz, included in its catalogue, for the first time, a record that was made in Spain. That record was ‘Pindio. Hors Catégorie’, a work by Juan Saiz (Santander, 1986) with Marco Mezquida (piano), Eric Sergi Antoine (double bass) and Genís Bagés (drums). Now, six years later, the prestigious British label is once again releasing a new album by Juan Saiz. ‘Pindio II’ presents a set of his own and unpublished compositions in which the composer works along the line of European jazz, avant-garde trends and free improvisation. An energetic and carefree repertoire that runs through very varied soundscapes in which each of the members develops in true freedom.

Flautist and saxophonist Juan Saiz presents his sixth album as a leader with a truly luxurious band. During his career, he has released six albums as a leader and has collaborated with authentic references of European music such as violinist and singer Iva Bittòva, trumpeter Bart Maris or double bass player Baldo Martínez.

Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the death of Frank Sinatra, considered by many jazz fans to be the greatest singer of all time. As a tribute to him, Big Band Ciutat d’Eivissa will offer a concert based on the repertoire of the Rat Pack, a group of Sinatra’s friends that included other singers such as Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. who performed in films and shows.

The repertoire of this year’s concert will be based on jazz standards and also on ‘jazzified’ versions of pop and rock songs, imagining how the members of the Rat Pack would have sung them in the 21st century.

David Sancho Trio

Pianist, composer and producer David Sancho returns to Eivissa Jazz Festival to present his latest project: ‘Meditaciones’, a trio album that mixes the roots of the most traditional jazz with textures of symphonic rock, classical, electronic and ambient music. Rodrigo Ballesteros on drums and Jesús Caparrós on electric bass and sound effects complete this project and will join him on stage in Ibiza.

He stands out as the winner of the competitions “Hazen intercentros” (2003), “Hazen Comunidad de Madrid” (2004) and the “Leidse jazz award” (2011), being the first winner not born in the Benelux.

He is a regular collaborator of Jorge Pardo, Rosario La Tremendita, Noa Lur, María Toro, Antonio Lizana, Shariff & Mxrgxn, Moisés P. Sánchez, Henry Cole, Cristina Mora, Ariel Brínguez, Leo Minax, Trinidad Jiménez, Alondra Bentley, Reiner Elizarde, Jesús Caparrós, Pablo Martín Caminero, Chema Vílchez, Marina Lledó, Ernesto Aurignac, Munir Hossn and Michael Olivera, among others.

ÍCHOS is a band of professional musicians from the island of Ibiza who have come together to create and play jazz, especially ‘hard bop’ jazz. This style, typically developed during the fifties and sixties of the twentieth century, has Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, Miles Davis Quintet, Cannonball Adderley Quintet and Horace Silver, among others, as their main references.

The band’s repertoire is made up of jazz standards and, mostly, their own songs and compositions, which range from hard bop to blues, funk and modal jazz influences.

The members of ÍCHOS are Naco “Nahuel” Aschei, trumpet; Víctor Ávila, sax; Vicent Tur, trombone; Chelu García, piano; Txumari García, bass and Dani Marín, drums.
